Auburn Runner Completes First Boilermaker 15k in Under 50 Minutes to Take Home Prize
Rome, NY (July 13, 2011) – Chip O'Hara of Auburn, NY is the Olivari First Timer Award Winner after clocking the fastest time in the Boilermaker 15k road race among all first time runners. O'Hara, 30, ran the long distance race in 49:54 and finished 33rd overall.
"I've wanted to run the Boilermaker for a number of years now, but it makes for an early Sunday morning with the hour and a half drive from Auburn to Utica," O'Hara explained. "I heard a lot of good things about the race from other runners and I did more long-distance training [this year], so I decided to get up early and give it a try."
O'Hara finished just behind many of the elite athletes and placed second in his age group, male 30-34. In that division, he was runner up to 33-year-old Abderrahime Bouramdane from Morocco who clocked in at 47:43. O'Hara enjoyed his first Boilermaker and plans to attend again next year.
In addition to the award for the fastest first year runner, Olivari also recognized every first timer with a small gift. The collaborative effort between Olivari Mediterranean Olive Oil and the Boilermaker Road Race is part of both company's efforts to encourage healthy, balanced lifestyles.
"A healthy lifestyle gives you more energy, a positive attitude, and just makes you feel better," O'Hara added. "Along with good nutrition, I think running is a great way to help maintain a healthy lifestyle because it's a very efficient and low-cost means of exercise that many people can do."
Boilermaker officials determined that of the 13,000 runners who signed up for the Boilermaker 15k, 4,515 were first time runners. This was the first year that such a statistic was documented. Olivari awarded every first time runner with a special First Timer pin which was distributed at the time of their bib pickup.
"The number of first time runners who signed up and completed the Boilermaker 15k this year was overwhelming, " said Tim Reed, executive director of the Boilermaker Road Race. "We should be very pleased as a community. This stat tells us that we are encouraging new people each year to train for the Boilermaker and begin living healthier lives. The pin was an excellent added touch. Hopefully every year, spectators will be able to identify new runners by this sort of memento."
Olivari, locally based in Rome, NY, held a tasting booth in the Beef Up Your Health Tent at the Boilermaker Expo during the two days prior to the race. Other upcoming sampling events include the New York State Fair later this summer and Harvest Fest in the fall. Olivari is sold locally at Chanatry's, Hannaford, Price Chopper and Walmart Supercenter.
