Boilermaker President Named Race Director of the Year
(Nov. 14, 2016)
A committee made up of race directors, athletes, media, corporate executives and club officials has named Tim Reed, President of the Boilermaker Road Race, the MarathonFoto/Road Race Management Race Director of the Year.
Reed was honored at a reception at the Road Race Management Race Directors' Meeting in St. Petersburg, FL on November 10. Electric City Printing presents this award.
"From a large and very impressive field of well-qualified candidates, Tim emerged as the winner," said Road Race Management President Phil Stewart. Described by Bill Rodgers as "the Gold Medal of race directing," the award is one of the most prestigious honors in the sport of road racing. "Anyone nominated should be proud of their accomplishments," said Stewart.
In presenting the award Stewart added, "Our 2016 winner, although hardly immune from the long hours of race weekends, hails from the visionary side of the race directing equation. Since assuming the title of president of the race organization in 2007, he has used his expertise in sales and marketing to expand the sponsor base. After the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013, he worked with local law enforcement personnel to create a model unified command center. Over the last several years he has implemented a charity bib program, which has raised nearly $400,000 for local charities, and in 2015, thanks to his drive, the event moved into the new 25,000 square foot office right at the finish line of the race. In addition, beyond performing the myriad of tasks essential to staging the Boilermaker, he has carried his vision of a healthier community into areas outside the race itself by working with the local County Cooperative Extension to create a community garden on a grassy plot of land adjoining the new office building and by opening up a local Farmer's Market. He has also started a no-cost Halloween Kids Run. The entire Utica community has been enriched by Tim's tireless advocacy of fitness for all."
"For his steadfast commitment to improving the lives of others, both through his event and while overseeing the event's growth and innovation, we salute Tim Reed, President of the Boilermaker 15K Road Race in Utica, New York, as the 2016 RRM Race Director of the Year," Stewart concluded.
