2008 - Scott Hughes

 

The Boilermaker Road Race has announced that the Volunteer of the Year Award has been presented to Scott Hughes, assistant transportation and parking coordinator.

 

Hughes' main responsibility is the organization and communication of the available transportation and parking for all the Boilermaker runners. He works closely with local and state officials to ensure that all runners arrive safely and on time for the start of the races. Moreover, after the post-race festivities, he must make sure that everyone has transportation back to the parking lots throughout the city.

 

"I am very humbled [to win this award] because I truly enjoy what I do," Hughes said. "Each of us [volunteers] plays an important role on many different levels for the Boilermaker to be so successful. So I accept this award on behalf of all the Boilermaker volunteers."

 

Hughes has participated in 19 Boilermakers and has been a committee member for 14 years. He became a volunteer as a way to become more involved in local events and to give back to the community.

 

"Scott's unwavering dedication and selfless attitude made him an obvious choice for Volunteer of the Year," said Tim Reed, executive director. "He constantly places the needs of the organization above his own and has a knack for always paying attention to the smallest details."

 

Hughes, a Herkimer native, is a general manager at Human Technology Corporation in Utica.
