Roadrunner Mile Features Area's Top, Young Athletes

Jul. 2, 2009

July 2, 2009 (Utica, NY) — The 2nd annual Roadrunner Mile, sponsored by Time Warner Cable, will feature the area's top runners, including Marcellus standout Chris Stogsdill, who recently won the mile race at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in North Carolina.

The Roadrunner Mile will kick off Boilermaker Week when elite high school and college athletes toe the line on Wednesday, July 8 at 6 p.m. The event starts at the intersection of Valley View Drive and the Utica Memorial Parkway and concludes at the corner of Oneida St. and the Parkway.  Participation is by invitation only.

Stogsdill, who participated last year, is now a graduated senior heading to Iona College in New Rochelle, NY.  In June, he competed against Fayetteville-Manlius rival Alax Hatz in Greensboro, N.C.  Stogsdill clocked a winning time of 4:06.70, just less than one second ahead of his counterpart.  His time, which earned him national recognition, was a career-best as he ran a blistering 2-minute last half-mile.

The Roadrunner Mile has grown in size since the inaugural race in 2008, with nearly 45 runners participating this year.  There are four heats geared towards high-school boys, high-school girls, college men, and college women.  Some notable, local participants include: Heather Vroman of Utica, Christine Mulvihill of Remsen, Ryan Millar of New Hartford, and Hunter Padgett of Clinton.

"The event is fun and challenging for the runners and is also thrilling for the spectators," said Gary Parker, coordinator of the Roadrunner Mile and track and cross country coach at Mohawk Valley Community College.  "This event is only getting bigger and we're eager to see what these young men and women can do this year.  The quick, exciting event showcases some of the best kids around so we encourage everyone from the community to come out and cheer on the runners."

Each runner will receive a complimentary t-shirt donated by Time Warner Cable.  For more information about the race, contact Parker at gparker@mvcc.edu.
