Boilermaker Announces Race Cap for 15K/5K Races

Dec. 28, 2010

Utica, NY (December 28th, 2010) The Boilermaker Road Race announced that the 2011 Boilermaker 15K and 5K races will be instituting a registration cap. The 15K will be capped at 13,000, and the 5K will be capped at 4,000. In 2010, 13,108 registered for the 15K and 2,991 registered for the 5K. The 3 Mile Walk will not be capped and will allow registration up to and including the day of the walk; Saturday July 9th.
Boilermaker officials cited issues such as safety, and a constrained Start Line, as the primary reasons to cap the race.
In an effort to promote on-line registration, initial registration will be on-line only. On-line registration will open up on Saturday, January 8th at midnight; the half-way point to the 2011 Boilermaker. The official website of the Boilermaker, boilermaker.com, is where participants can sign up for the 2011 events.
Tim Reed, Executive Director of the Boilermaker said: "Not only does it make good economic sense to sign up early, but it may decide if you get to run The Race."
On Saturday, February 5th, paper applications will be available at various locations, still to be determined. Due to recent PCI pronouncements regarding credit card security, the Boilermaker will no longer accept credit card payments via paper applications. Credit cards will be used for on-line registration only. In addition, a two dollar paper processing fee will be instituted for the 15K, 5K and 3- Mile Walk.   All processing fees for the 3-Mile Walk will be donated to a charity that benefits from the Walk. This year's charity of choice will be The Neighborhood Center.
In other news the 5k will be renamed a "race" rather than a "run", meaning the top three male and female finishers will be acknowledged, however, there will be no cash prizes for the 5K Race. Another notable change is the start time for the 5K Race will be moved from 7:30 a.m. to 7:15 a.m.
Jim Stasaitis, Boilermaker Race Director said: "This change will both remind people that this is a race, and not a walk, and alleviate 5K runners and 15K wheelchair athletes intermixing at the Finish Line."
The 34th running of the Boilermaker will take place Sunday, July 10th 2011.
