Boilermaker Introduces New President, Mark Donovan
Jun. 7, 2018
The Boilermaker Road Race is pleased to announce that Mark Donovan has assumed the role of President of the non-profit organization that organizes the world famous road race.
Donovan, a native of Albany, NY, has lived and worked in the Mohawk Valley for 23 years. His professional career has focused on sales, marketing and general management leadership roles within several distinct industries. After spending over a decade in company-side commercial insurance, he relocated with his family to New Hartford, NY where he began a successful career in the medical device space with ConMed. During his twenty plus years at ConMed, Donovan held a variety of positions with increasing responsibilities, culminating with his role as Vice President of Gastroenterology, Cardiology & Critical Care and Global Corporate Marketing where he was responsible for approximately $110M of global sales and over 100 employees in addition to refining the company's global branding efforts. Most recently, Donovan served as COO of the Mele Companies Inc., another iconic Mohawk Valley company.
"It is an honor and a privilege to have the opportunity to lead the Boilermaker organization. I relocated to the Utica area in 1995 when it was in the throes of losing three major employers with the departures of Chicago Pneumatic, Griffiss Air Force Base and Lockheed Martin. Amidst those turbulent economic times, I witnessed the Boilermaker experience serve as a rope for the community to hang onto and rally around," said Donovan. "Family members, friends, neighbors, and local companies all poured their hearts and souls into making Boilermaker Weekend an enduring community event with worldwide appeal. I draw my inspiration from the founders and stewards who have set a very high bar and positioned the organization to be much more than a race."
Ultimately, as shepherd of the Boilermaker for the next phase if its existence, Donovan is looking forward to providing participants with a one-of-a-kind experience, whether they are runners, volunteers, sponsors, or community members. He recognizes the charge to continuously improve the experience surrounding the Boilermaker and believes that the organization can impact the health and wellness needs of our community year-round.
Donovan added, "I eagerly accept the challenge to carry the organization's momentum forward as we continue to enhance the experience of Boilermaker Weekend and further develop activities, events and partnerships dedicated to the health & wellness of our community."
"When I started the race 41 years ago my goal was to change people's lives in a positive way. We are very excited to have Mark join us and I'm confident he will carry this mission forward," said Earle Reed, founder of the Boilermaker Road Race. "The race has always been our what, but not our why."
Donovan, 55, is a graduate of LeMoyne College in Syracuse, NY. He resides in New Hartford with his wife Kathy, a local artist and STEM Enrichment Educator in the New Hartford Central School District. They have two sons, Joe who is a recent graduate of Northeastern University in Boston, MA and Tom, who is a rising senior at Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY.
The 41st running of the Boilermaker Road Race will take place on Sunday, July 8th, 2018. Bibs are sold out, but a waiting list is in place and Charity Bibs are still available by contacting firstname.lastname@example.org.
