Frequently Asked Questions


The 2021 Boilermaker will commemorate its 44th running with runners from near and far participating both in-person and virtually.

Coming off of last year's transition from an in-person event to a virtual one and in order to ensure a safe and comfortable race day, this year's races have several key changes you need to be aware of as you prepare to register and participate. In the FAQs below, we lay out those changes as answers to your most important questions.

What is the date of the 2021 Boilermaker?

What are the race capacities this year?


  • 15K presented by Excellus Blue Cross, Blue Shield 12,000

  • Utica National 5K 4,000

How is the Boilermaker preparing for the health and safety of everyone from a COVID-19 perspective?


  • All registered participants, will be required to be vaccinated by Wednesday, September 22nd in order to participate in the 2021 Boilermaker races and attend the Saranac Post-Race Party.


  • The decision to allow only vaccinated participants in the races and the Saranac Post-Race Party was not taken lightly. At the end of the day, the existence and availability of these vaccines are the only reason we are even able to bring live racing back this year. As a health & wellness organization using road racing to change people's lives in a positive way, the Boilermaker is grateful for its existence and efficacy and proudly supports the continued advancement of the vaccination rate. In addition, it offers the optimal path to provide a comfortable and safe Boilermaker experience for the eligible participants and our community.


  • The Boilermaker will be continuously monitoring NYS COVID-19 guidelines and will communicate any required changes directly to registered participants via email and via our social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter).

What are the race fees and race incentives for the 2021 Boilermaker?


  • For 2021, the in-person Boilermaker fees will remain the same as 2020 (listed below) and will remain firm throughout the registration periods (e.g. there will be no tiered pricing this year).


  • Fees:

    • Utica National 5K $45
    • Virtual Boilermaker
      • 15K $35

    • Race Incentives:

How can I run in the 2021 Boilermaker?


  • The 2021 Boilermaker will have both an in-person and a virtual option for participants to choose from.
  • To participate in the in-person races, all registrants MUST be vaccinated by Wednesday, September 22nd, 2021 AND be able to provide valid proof of their vaccination and their identity at packet pick-up on October 8th or 9th at the MVHS Health & Wellness Expo.
  • Registration periods begin on July 1st as detailed below:
    • *Rollovers from 2020 July 1st @ Noon through July 8th @ Noon
    • *2020 Virtual Boilermaker participants July 9th @ Noon through July 15th @ Noon
    • Open Registration (in-person races) July 15th @ Noon
    • Virtual Options July 1st @ Noon
    • ALL registration for the 2021 Boilermaker will close at noon on Friday, October 1st, 2021 or once race caps are reached.


    *If you rolled your registration for the 2020 races over to this year's races or participated in the 2020 Virtual Boilermaker, you will receive emails from us with specific instructions. Therefore, it is incumbent upon you to check your emails including your SPAM folder regularly. NOTE: Our only way to communicate directly with you is via the email you used when you last registered for a Boilermaker event. If your email has changed, please notify us immediately at racedirector@boilermaker.com and be sure to include your name and phone number!

I rolled over my 2020 registration fee to 2021. What do I need to do in order to participate in the 2021 Boilermaker?


  • On Tuesday, June 29th, the Boilermaker sent an email to the address you used when you registered back in 2020. This email contains specific instructions for you to follow. If you have not received this email or changed your email address over the past year, please email racedirector@boilermaker.com ASAP with your name and your phone number.


  • You will need to formally register for the 2021 Boilermaker.


  • You will have an exclusive window of opportunity to register beginning at noon on Thursday, July 1st through Thursday, July 8th at noon. As long as you register within this time frame according to the instructions sent to you, your registration fee from 2020 will be applied to your 2021 registration!

  • To participate in the in-person races, all registrants MUST be vaccinated by Wednesday, September 22nd, 2021 AND be able to provide valid proof of their vaccination and their identity at packet pick-up on October 8th or 9th at the MVHS Health & Wellness Expo.

I participated in the 2020 Virtual Boilermaker. Do I receive any special registration access for the 2021 Boilermaker?


  • Yes!


  • Yes you are eligible for Priority Registration which takes place Friday, July 9th, 12 PM - Thursday, July 15th, 12 PM.


  • To participate in the in-person races, all registrants MUST be vaccinated by Wednesday, September 22nd, 2021 AND be able to provide valid proof of their vaccination and their identity at packet pick-up on October 8th or 9th at the MVHS Health & Wellness Expo.

How & Where do I pick up my race packet (bib) and race incentives?


  • Packet pick-up will be held on Friday, October 8th from Noon until 7:00pm and Saturday, October 9th from 8:00am until 5:00pm at the MVHS Health & Wellness Expo in the former Macy's location in the Sangertown Square Mall in New Hartford, NY (look for Boilermaker signs)


  • In order to pick up your race packet, etc., you must be ready to provide proof of your being vaccinated by Wednesday, September 22nd, 2021 and a valid photo ID. The Boilermaker will be accepting your proof via the NYS Excelsior app (epass.ny.gov) or your hard copy vaccination card. It is incumbent upon you to ensure that your various proofs are up to date and valid as there will be no refunds should this become an issue at packet pick-up.


  • Race-day packet pick-up will be offered on a limited basis and under the following strict rules:.

    • Utica National 5K race-day packet pick-up will be open at 6 AM and will have a hard close at 7 AM in order to ensure a proper start to the race.

    • 15K presented by Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield race-day packet pick-up will open at 6 AM and will have a hard close at 7:45 AM in order to ensure a proper start to the race.
    • In order to pick up your race packet, etc., you must be ready to provide proof of your being vaccinated by Wednesday, September 22nd, 2021 and a valid photo ID. The Boilermaker will be accepting your proof via the NYS Excelsior app (epass.ny.gov) or your hard copy vaccination card. It is incumbent upon you to ensure that your various proofs are up to date and valid as there will be no refunds should this become an issue at packet pick-up.

What if I am unable to attend after registering for the 2021 Boilermaker?

Our normal policies are in place. There are no refunds nor modified deferrals.

Are there any exceptions to the COVID vaccination policy?

The only exceptions to the vaccination policy are for children aged 11 years old or under and those individuals with a medically approved certification for vaccine accommodation:


  • A) Children aged 11 years old and younger are eligible to participate as the currently available COVID-19 vaccines are not yet approved for use on them. See below (item C) for COVID-19 mitigation requirements for children granted a vaccine exemption.


  • B) Prospective participants who have a medically approved reason for not receiving any of the available COVID-19 vaccinations MAY be accommodated and allowed to run in the 2021 in-person Boilermaker. Requests for a medical accommodation must be completed and sent to marketing@boilermaker.com. CLICK HERE TO ACCESS FORM. See below (item C) for COVID-19 mitigation requirements for anyone granted a vaccine exemption.


  • C) In order to pick up your race packet (bib), you will need to present proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of race day and proof of identity. On race-day, a facial mask must be worn at any time when proper social distancing cannot be maintained. Essentially, this translates to wearing a mask at the start line up, finish line and post-race party.

Can I transfer my bib (registration) to another runner?


  • Yes, but please note that the requirement for all participants to be vaccinated applies for the transferee as it does for you.


  • Below is the process for you to accomplish this via your RunSignUp account.

    • The Transfer Process will open at noon on Monday, August 2nd.
    • A registrant offers their registration to another user, and upon that user's paid registration in RunSignUp, the original registrant receives a refund.
    • All transfer requests must be made online via the RunSignUp platform.
    • Transferee (new participant) will incur the cost of the registration fee and a transfer fee unless the transfer is gifted.
    • Transferee (new participant) is subject to the vaccination requirement as outlined in the registration process.
    • The Transfer Process will close at noon on Monday, October 4th.
    • There are no Race Weekend Transfers.

Will there be a bag check available?


  • Yes for the 15K only. A bag check truck will be located along Dwyer Avenue adjacent to the 15K Start line.


  • Participants wishing to use this benefit should bring their own, clear plastic bag as we are not able to provide them.
